Tuesday PM Open Session 2 Ideas:

Post ideas for Session 2 here!  This is where you participate.  Create a session title and a brief description or, edit someone else's title and description.  Have a completely different idea?  Add it to the list and we will decide based on who has interest.

Let's reschedule our LOR discussion here! If we run out of time or not everyone can attend, the discussion can spill over into dinner conversation...

Notes

Laurence Lannom explained: Copies of the ADL_Registry can be downloaded now, but it isn't a turnkey app yet. By fall, a more customizable version of the registry will be available. ADL's own registry is Department of Defense specific. Lannom is hopeful that the DoD may fund the creation of a registry of registries--clients of such a meta-registry would be the CDC and ADL itself.

In reflecting on learning object repositories, the UIowa decided that there were show-stopping issues with permissions in using a central repository for most instructional materials, which are used under fair use permissions. On this note, there is currently an e-Reserves legal case: several publishers are suing Georgia State, claiming that their e-reserves violate copyright... The results of this case will be influential!

The U of I is looking for other options beyond D2L's LOR... They have installations of Xythos, bePress (a hosting service for scholarly publications), and Contentdm.

Harvest Road might be an option with more permissions control...

WI is considering purchasing D2L's LOR...

A community college in Michigan is using Angel ...

If you're looking for information on LORs, G.A> Redding (ADL) noted that a Hewitt Foundation grant evaluated repository software, and that ADL evaluated course management software, whether they have LORs, and what their features are...

ADL is investigating open source repositories... Plone, an open source product built on python; and Moodle... UW LaCrosse has a production box... They're integrating it with a registry... The connectivity with Moodle is working with general materials, but SCORM materials lose their functionality. They are looking for participants to collaborate with. They have 130 objects ready to go.

Stay tuned to a presentation tomorrow to learn more about Wisconsin's Praxis project...

Alan Wolf explained: UW Madison is looking for a repository that would support faculty activities and student activities... They're looking at Fedora (out of Cornell; closely tied to the NSF, so has stability that many open source products do not have) as the service layer, layering on top workflows and interfaces for search. UW Digital Collections Center is working with the central IT unit at Madison to build a solution. Data sets and research results and teaching materials and professional scholarship reusable across one system, without having multiple copies. Permissions will be very important.  ... And, NIH is promoting Shibboleth, an inter-institution identity management system. dSpace (offering the workflows) and Fedora (which offers the underpinnings) are talking now... In general, UW-Madison is exploring with the purpose of moving from boutique installations to institution-wide service. Outsourcing to Google, Amazon, or working with iTunes U (like an e-reserves for multi-media) are also issues on the table...)

Notes

  • Hi, everyone. During the session we discussed whether MERLOT was a registry or a repository. Here's text from the MERLOT website: "About the MERLOT collection: The MERLOT Repository is not only learning materials. Along with the learning materials, members have contributed assignments and comments to enhance the teaching experience of an exercise." This suggests to me that it is a repository, unless the website is out of date. taste.merlot.org/merlotcollection.html
